The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) premieres the sixth music video, “Champions,” from the ASCAP Songwriter Residency: Volume 7 album today. The song was co-written and performed by five-time Grammy-winning rapper/producer Malik Yusef (Kanye West, Common) with Golden Globe-winning songwriter Julie Frost (Pitbull, Madonna) and 11 America SCORES Chicago students of Hearst Elementary School. It was written over the course of two afternoons, and recorded on a third at CRC Studios in Chicago, Illinois.

“Champions” is one of seven tracks on ASCAP Songwriter Residency: Volume 7, which was released for streaming and as a free download on Friday, September 25th at www.ascap.com/songwriterresidency.

Commenting on the program, Frost said, “Writing and recording with Malik and the kids from America scores was inspiring, beautiful and heart opening. It was an honor to be a part of this important and unique music outreach program, I’m grateful to everyone involved.”

Yusef added, “I participated in this program last year and was blown away. I was very glad to lead more sessions this year. The kids were powerful. It was amazing and beautiful.”

The ASCAP Songwriter Residency has partnered with America SCORES Chicago on four prior occasions. Amy Mummery, Education Director of America SCORES Chicago, greatly appreciates the value of the program, “The ASCAP experience provides America SCORES poet-athletes with a unique opportunity to engage in the songwriting process and celebrate the power that music has to breathe new life into their poetry.”

The ASCAP Songwriter Residency, a partnership with acclaimed after-school program America SCORES, is an annual mentorship program that provides a platform for songwriters to engage and inspire elementary and middle school students in under-resourced neighborhoods around the country. The ASCAP Foundation, a public charity dedicated to supporting music education and talent development programs, funds the program.

Other artists on Vol. 7 include Grammy Award-winning producer/songwriter Alonzo “Zo” Lee (Ludacris, Usher) collaborating with country hit songwriter Walt Aldridge (Travis Tritt, Heartland) in St. Louis; critically acclaimed composer/songwriter Gabriel Mann (Modern Family, Rectify) in LA; Grammy and Emmy-nominated composer/songwriter David Wolfert (Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand) with acclaimed songwriter/producer Johnny Blk (Daughtry, Jessie J) in NYC; hit country songwriter Felix McTeigue (Florida Georgia Line, Dallas Smith) in Boston; chart-topping R&B songwriter/producer Andrea Martin (En Vogue, Leona Lewis) in NYC and hit songwriter Dave Berg (Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney) with critically acclaimed songwriter-producer Tony Esterly in Portland OR.
