Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS, The Doobie Brothers, St. Vincent and Top Songwriters Celebrated at 2015 ASCAP Pop Music Awards

Max Martin Earns Songwriter of the Year for 8th Time
Toby Gad's "All of Me" (John Legend) Wins Song of the Year
Sony/ATV is Publisher of the Year
Prescription Songs is Independent Publisher of the Year

LOS ANGELES, April 29, 2015 -- The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) hosted its 32nd annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards on April 29th at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles. An exclusive, invitation-only crowd was on hand as the organization recognized the songwriters and publishers of ASCAP’s most performed pop songs of 2014. ASCAP also bestowed its highest honor, the ASCAP Founders Award, on rock heroes Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS, and presented The Doobie Brothers with the ASCAP Voice of Music Award and St. Vincent with ASCAP's Vanguard Award.

ASCAP Pop Awards winners included:

  • Songwriter of the Year: Max Martin
  • Song of the Year: "All of Me," written by Toby Gad, performed by John Legend
  • Publisher of the Year: Sony/ATV Tunes, LLC
  • Independent Publisher of the Year: Prescription Songs LLC

Grammy Award-winning musician, singer-songwriter and producer Dave Grohl presented the ASCAP Founders Award to rock ‘n roll icons, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS. The Founders Award is given to pioneering ASCAP songwriters who have made exceptional contributions to music by inspiring and influencing their fellow music creators. KISS has sold 100 million albums worldwide in their 40-year career and penned eternal favorites like “Detroit Rock City,” “Shout It Out Loud,” “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” and “Rock and Roll All Nite.” Previous Founders Award recipients include Elvis Costello, Sir Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, Steely Dan, Steven Tyler & Joe Perry (Aerosmith), Tom Waits, Ann & Nancy Wilson (Heart) and Neil Young.

Patrick Simmons and Michael McDonald of The Doobie Brothers accepted the ASCAP Voice of Music Award from ASCAP Assistant Vice President, Creative Services Loretta Muñoz. The award honors ASCAP members whose music gives voice to the spirit of a generation. With a catalog that includes #1 singles "Black Water" and "What a Fool Believes," plus hits like "Listen to the Music," "Jesus Is Just Alright," "Rockin' Down the Highway," "China Grove," "Take Me in Your Arms," "Takin' It to the Streets," "Minute by Minute," "You Belong to Me" and three multi-platinum, seven platinum, 14 gold albums and a rare diamond album for their Best of the Doobies, the band has made its mark on music history. They take their place among a stellar list of prior recipients: Mary J. Blige, Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Daddy Yankee, Luis Fonsi, Amy Grant, George Strait, Diane Warren and Jimmy Webb.

A singular voice in independent music today, St. Vincent was recognized with The ASCAP Vanguard Award. Presented by Big Deal Songs President Kenny MacPherson, the honor celebrates songwriters who have impacted musical genres that are shaping the future of American music. A Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter whose self-titled fourth studio album topped countless “Best Of” 2014 critics lists, St. Vincent just finished a high profile appearance at the Coachella Music Festival. Shejoins previous ASCAP Vanguard Award honorees including Arcade Fire, Band of Horses, Beastie Boys, Beck, Björk, Sara Bareilles, Diplo, fun., The Killers, Modest Mouse and The Strokes.

Max Martin was named ASCAP Pop Music Songwriter of the Year for the fifth consecutive year and eighth time in his career. The Swedish songwriter-producer wrote some of this year’s biggest hits including “Bang Bang” by Ariana Grande, Jessie J and Nicki Minaj; “Break Free” by Ariana Grande ft. Zedd; “Dark Horse” and “Roar” by Katy Perry; “Problem” by Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea; and “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift. Martin is now tied with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for the most ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Awards ever.

Toby Gad received Song of the Year for “All of Me,” which was recorded by John Legend and peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It became the second best-selling song of 2014 in the US, with 4.67 million copies sold for the year, and the third best-selling song in the United Kingdom. "All of Me" was also the third best-selling song of 2014 worldwide with sales of 12.3 million. The song is published by Gad Songs & Sony/ATV Tunes LLC.

ASCAP Publisher of the Year went to Sony/ATV, which had a role in 25 hit pop songs in 2014. ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthews and Executive Vice President of Membership John Titta presented the award to Sony/ATV CEO Martin Bandier and the Sony/ATV creative team. Matthews and Titta also presented the ASCAP Independent Publisher of the Year Award to Prescription Songs LLC SVP of Publishing Beka Tischker and the Prescription Songs creative team. Prescription has won the award three years in a row.

The music of the night’s honorees was brought to life during the show with Sebu Simonian of Capital Cities performing the band’s "Safe and Sound;” Maureen "MoZella" McDonald performing her Miley Cyrus hit, "Wrecking Ball;” Richie Sambora and Australian guitarist Orianthi performing the Doobie Brothers’ “Black Water” and “What a Fool Believes;” and singer-actor Constantine Maroulis performing a medley of KISS’s “Detroit Rock City,” “Love Gun,” “Shout It Out Loud” and “Rock and Roll All Nite.”
