New York, NY, November 5, 2014: The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and America SCORES Los Angeles are pleased to announce that acclaimed composer/songwriter/singer, Gabriel Mann, will participate in the ASCAP Songwriter Residency, a partnership with America SCORES. The Residency is a mentorship program that provides a platform for songwriters to engage and inspire elementary and middle school students in under-resourced neighborhoods. The ASCAP Foundation, a public charity dedicated to supporting music education and talent development, funds the program. For more information, click here.
Mann will co-write a song with 16 America SCORES Los Angeles 4th and 5th grade students at Braddock Drive Elementary School (4711 Inglewood Blvd.) from 2:30-4 pm on Monday, November 10th and Monday, November 17th. Mann will take students through the songwriting process, from structure to lyrics, followed by a day of tracking at The Village Recorder (1616 Butler Ave.) on Tuesday, December 2nd. The finished song will be included on a special compilation album made up of songs created from this year's six ASCAP Songwriter Residencies throughout the US. ASCAP produces and distributes this collection to each of the America SCORES schools involved with the program, as well as to music industry influencers.
Commenting on the program, Mann said, "I’m so excited to be a part of ASCAP’s Songwriter Residency. Music has given me so much — it’s what inspired me as a child, and it continues to inspire me today. I hope I can share the excitement of making music as a living, and I especially look forward to hearing the poetry of our youth. I’m really looking forward to hearing what they have to say and exposing them to the magic of turning their thoughts and experiences into a song, something they can touch and feel and hear and be proud of."
“There are few experiences that resonate for the kids in our program like the ASCAP Songwriter Residency,” said America SCORES Los Angeles Executive Director David Joseph. “Seeing their own words transform into lyrics and having the opportunity to record a song in a professional recording studio is an incredible thrill. But more than anything, the ASCAP Songwriter Residency pairs professional musicians and artists with the kids in America SCORES LA. Over three intense days, the songwriters quickly become teachers, mentors, and role models who inspire. That is tremendously impactful.”
