ASCAP Songwriter Residency: Volume 6 Album Now Available to Stream

Compilation Includes 7 Original Songs Written and Recorded by ASCAP Songwriters & America SCORES Students from 5 Cities Across U.S.

ASCAP Songwriter Residency: Volume 6

New York, NY, April 7, 2014: This past fall, The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) teamed up once again with America SCORES to present its national songwriting mentorship program, The ASCAP Songwriter Residency. And starting today, the product of this year’s program – a compilation album of seven original songs written and recorded by ASCAP songwriters and America SCORES public school students from five cities across the country – is available to stream in full at www.ascap.com/songwriterresidency.

The ASCAP Songwriter Residency is a partnership between ASCAP and nationally acclaimed after-school program America SCORES that provides a platform for songwriters and composers to give back to their local communities by engaging and inspiring students in under-resourced neighborhoods. The ASCAP Foundation, a public charity dedicated to supporting music education and talent development programs, funds the program.

Each of these workshops took place over the course of three afternoons, during which an ASCAP songwriter – from rising stars to Grammy Award-winning artists – collaborated with a group of 16-32 America SCORES students, co-writing an original song and recording it in a professional studio. ASCAP Songwriter Residency: Volume 6 represents seven of these workshops in five cities across the country. Copies of the album will be distributed to each of the students and schools involved in the program, as well as to a selection of music industry decision makers.

This year’s ASCAP Songwriter Residencies featured Grammy Award-winning songwriter-producer Alonzo "Zo" Lee (Ludacris, Usher), chart-topping country songwriter Walt Aldridge (Travis Tritt, Heartland) in St. Louis, blockbuster film scoring composer Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me, It’s Complicated) in Los Angeles, Grammy nominated songwriter-producer Darhyl “DJ” Camper (Jay Z, John Legend, Big Sean) in New York City, Grammy Award-winning musician Malik Yusek (Kanye West, Common) in Chicago, Multi-platinum Grammy & Emmy-winning, producer, musician and recording artist Narada Michael Walden (Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder) in San Francisco and chart-topping jazz artist and composer Sachal Vasandani (Sony Records) in New York City.

The first video release from ASCAP Songwriter Residency: Volume 6 – “I Believe in Me” – comes from songwriter-producer Alonzo “Zo” Lee and songwriters Tendai, Psalm One, Flo and the America SCORES students from 14 cities. Check out the video below, and stay tuned for more video releases from the Residency in the coming months.

The ASCAP Songwriter Residency: Volume 6 album release coincides with this year’s America SCORES National Poetry SLAM! at the New York Stock Exchange, an event that will showcase original works of poetry by 26 children from 13 cities, and also feature a live performance by Sachal Vasandani and the America SCORES NY students of PS 325 of  “You Belong to Me” – a song written and recorded as part of the Residency last fall.

In addition to working with America SCORES, the ASCAP Songwriter Residency connected a songwriter with the PENCIL Partnership Program, which helps thousands of business and school leaders develop unique, school-based collaborations that have a lasting impact on the students, school community and school culture. Daryhl "DJ" Camper’s residency was with students from the East Fordham Academy of the Arts in Bronx, NY, one of the PENCIL Partnership schools that work with ASCAP.

About America SCORES
America SCORES is the largest urban school-based soccer organization in the U.S. with a mission to inspire urban youth to lead healthy lives, be engaged students, and have the confidence and character to make a difference in the world.  Established in 1994, it is the first national organization to create a sustainable and replicable model that brings soccer to urban areas through a holistic after school program. Using soccer as a tool for social change, America SCORES creates teams through the sport of soccer; brings these teams into the classroom to discover their voice through poetry; and as a team, the students learn to use their voices to make change in their communities.  The result is a team of children who experience success on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.
