Chicago, IL, December 10, 2013: The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and America SCORES are pleased to announce that Grammy-winning musician Malik Yusef will participate in the ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES, a mentorship program that provides a platform for songwriters to engage and inspire elementary and middle school students in under-resourced neighborhoods.

Yusef will co-write a song with America SCORES students at Hearst Elementary School (4640 S. Lamon, Chicago, IL 60638) on December 16th and 17th, 2013. Yusef and the students will then record the song at Chicago Recording Company (232 East Ohio St., Chicago, IL 60611), on December 18th, 2013. Yusef will also bring Grant Parks to work alongside him during the program. The finished song will be included on a special compilation album made up of songs created from this year's six ASCAP Songwriter Residencies. ASCAP produces and distributes this collection to each of the America SCORES schools involved with the program, as well as to music industry influencers.

Malik Yusef’s reasons for participating in the program are sincere: “In addition to being able to reach back and inspire, I look forward with great joy to experiencing the new sound of the American youth. Think young, be young and stay young. The youth always win. ‘Except ye become as a little child, ye shall in no wise enter into the Kingdom of God!’ (Mat.18:3)”

Malik Yusef, also known as The Wordsmyth, is a Grammy Award-winning, 6-time ASCAP Award winner (both Pop and Rhythm & Soul categories), as well as an Emmy, Peabody and Tony winner. Yusef is a key influencer in the community. His youth literacy foundation, For Yourself Foundation, seeks out and offers alternatives to youth who have mitigating circumstances similar to Malik’s troubled beginnings during his formative years. He seeks to use his star power and influence to help prevent others from making the same mistakes.

Grant Parks is one of Chicago’s premier producers. Born and raised on Chicago’s West Side and educated in the theory of musical and studio engineering, his sound sets an industry standard with raw innovative techniques that span across many music genres. In 2008, Grant was part of KRS One's re-launch of his Stop the Violence Organization in Chicago. He produced a song that included Twista, Syleena Johnson, Crucial Conflict & others; along with school lectures and a music concert fund raiser. Currently, Parks is working on artist features and film/TV production placements with Viacom Networks. Grant has worked with many artists over the years, including Grammy Award-winning songwriter Malik Yusef (G.O.O.D. Music), Rhymefest, Sadat X & Grand Puba of Brand Nubian, KRS One, Pharoahe Monch, WC of Westside Connection, GLC and many more.

This year’s program also features chart-topping country music songwriter Walt Aldridge (Travis Tritt, Heartland) in St. Louis, MO; Grammy and Emmy-winning producer, musician and recording artist Narada Michael Walden (Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder) in San Fransisco, CA; blockbuster film-scoring composer Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me, It’s Complicated) in Los Angeles, CA; and Jazz songwriter/performer Sachal Vasandani (Mack Avenue Records) with Grammy-nominated producer Darhyl “DJ” Camper (John Legend, Jay Z) in NYC. Established in 2006, the ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES has brought more than 40 songwriters to 14 cities across the country. The ASCAP Foundation, a public charity dedicated to supporting music education and talent development, funds the program. For more information, click here.
