New York, NY, October 31, 2013: ASCAP and America SCORES are pleased to announce that acclaimed songwriter, producer and artist Narada Michael Walden will participate in the ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES, a mentorship program that provides a platform for songwriters to engage and inspire elementary and middle school students in under-resourced neighborhoods.  The ASCAP Foundation, a public charity dedicated to supporting music education and talent development, funds the program. Walden will co-write a song with America SCORES students at E.R. Taylor Elementary School (423 Burrows St., San Francisco, CA 94134) from November 5th-6th. Walden and the students will then record the song at Walden’s own Tarpan Studios on November 7th. The finished song will be included on a special compilation album made up of songs created from this year's six ASCAP Songwriter Residencies. ASCAP produces and distributes this collection to each of the America SCORES schools involved with the program, as well as to music industry influencers.

Commenting on the program, Walden said: "I am so happy to be working with ASCAP and America SCORES on this great program. Creating music with young people is a part of my mission. It gives them joy, boosts their confidence and exposes opportunities for a future in the arts. This program brings a creative outlet to these young people that unfortunately has been so neglected in the public school system today."

Producing hits for artists as diverse as Aretha Franklin, Steve Winwood, Ray Charles, Wynonna Judd, Whitney Houston, George Michael, Mariah Carey, Barbra Streisand, Lionel Ritchie, Lisa Fischer, Stevie Wonder, Tom Jones, Jeff Beck and The Temptations, Emmy and Grammy-winning Narada Michael Walden has been at the helm of hit music that spans decades. As impressive a production and songwriting resume as he has assembled, Walden has also earned equal acclaim as a recording and performing artist. Beginning as a drummer with the pioneering Mahavishnu Orchestra, Narada also toured with Jeff Beck, Tommy Bolin and Weather Report. Walden’s music includes groundbreaking soundtrack work on blockbuster films like The Bodyguard, Free Willy, Beverly Hills Cops II, 9 ½ Weeks and Stuart Little, as well as the Emmy-winning “One Moment In Time,” the theme to the 1988 Olympic Games.

Walden founded the Narada Michael Walden Foundation, which delivers its services through a network of non-profit organizations with proven records of success in youth education and community empowerment. The Foundation also endows scholarships for aspiring musicians and enables the stars of tomorrow by offering emerging young artists from around the world access to recording facilities, coaching and production support.

Billboard has honored him as one of the Top Ten Producers of all time, and for 27 years, he has successfully run his Marin County-based Tarpan Studios recording studio. Tarpan Records released his latest album, Thunder 2013, on September 17th, 2013.

This year’s ASCAP Songwriter Residencies in other cities feature chart-topping country music songwriter Walt Aldridge (Travis Tritt, Heartland) in St. Louis, MO; blockbuster film-scoring composer Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me, It’s Complicated) in Los Angeles, CA; Jazz songwriter-performer Sachal Vasandani (Mac Avenue Records) and Grammy-nominated producer Darhyl “DJ” Camper (John Legend, Jay Z) in NYC; and five-time Grammy-winning rapper and producer Malik Yusef (Kanye West, Common) in Chicago, IL.

Established in 2006, the ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES has brought more than 40 songwriters to 14 cities across the country.
