T.I. to Headline BET Networks & ASCAP Present The Music Matters SXSW Showcase Hosted by Yahoo!

Schoolboy Q, Bridget Kelly, Chrisette Michele, BJ the Chicago Kid, DJ Drama, Joey Badass and Lecrae Confirmed to Perform

New York, NY, March 12, 2013: On Thursday, March 14th at 8:00pm CST, BET & ASCAP present “The BET Music Matters Showcase hosted by Yahoo!” and headlined by ASCAP’s own T.I.. Firmly established as the place to see the best urban indie artists, this year’s showcase ventures off into mainstream, with a performance from the Trouble Man himself – T.I..

“BET is dedicated to identifying outstanding artists early and supporting them in their rise. We’re thrilled to bring our classic Music Matters showcase to SXSW for the third year in a row featuring a vibrant collection of performers; some we’ve rocked with for a while, some relatively new, ALL with outsized talent. We’re also glad to get down with ASCAP and Yahoo! – two entities that, like BET, prove their love and support for music every day,” said Stephen Hill, President of Music Programming and Specials, BET Networks.

This year’s showcase promises to be a great night of music that runs the gamut from Top Dawg Entertainment’s SchoolBoy Q, to everybody’s favorite DJ Drama, Roc Nation’s R&B diva Bridget Kelly, the incomparable Chrisette Michele and a few new kids on the block already making a name for themselves – BJ The Chicago Kid, Joey Badass and Lecrae.

The BET Music Matters Showcase at last year’s SXSW was hosted by Timbaland and featured performances by Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar, Miguel, Marsha Ambrosius, MGK, Stalley, Big K.R.I.T, Stalley and more. 2013 marks BET Networks’ third year at SXSW and the BET Music Matters showcase just keeps getting bigger. Partnering this year with ASCAP – the worldwide leader in performance royalties, service and advocacy for songwriters, composers and music publishers – further proves BET’s commitment to supporting artists and songwriters, from big to small, throughout their entire career.

Artist Bios

T.I. born Clifford Joseph Harris Jr. in Atlanta, Georgia. Also known as Tip or T.I.P, T.I. is also an actor know for films such as ATL, American Gangster & Takers. T.I. has two reality shows, T.I. Road to Redemption which aired on MTV, & T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle with his wife Tameka "Tiny" Cottle that airs on VH1. Since his start in the music industry T.I. has put out eight albums and will be releasing his ninth, Trouble Man II: He Who Wears the Crow, later on this year.

Bridget Kelly
Bridget Kelly is a New York City-based, singer-songwriter signed to Roc Nation. Her debut single, “Special Delivery,” was released in August 2012. She won a Grammy Award in songwriting for “Einstein,” a song she wrote for Kelly Clarkson and her album Stronger. Kelly has frequently filled in for artist, Alicia Keys, in performances of “Empire State of Mind” with Jay-Z, such as, Coachella Friday Night with Jonathon Ross, 9/11 Memorial Service and Saturday Night Live. Kelly has toured with Jay-Z on his Blueprint 3 tour and Estelle at the BET Music Matters tour. She also performed at Essence Music Festival.

Chrisette Michele
Chrisette Michele was born Chrisette Michele Payne in Central Islip, New York. She received her first Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance after the release of her first album, I Am, for the single “Be Ok.” She has since released two other successful albums, Epiphany and Let Freedom Reign, and is also releasing her fourth album, Better, this year. Chrisette is featured on several hip-hop albums, such as Nas’ Hip Hop is Dead, Jay-Z’s Kingdom Come, The Game’s LAX and Ghostface Killah’s The Big Doe Rehab.

SchoolBoy Q
Quincy Matthew Hanley, known by his stage name Schoolboy Q, is a hip-hop recording artist and member of hip-hop supergroup Black Hippy. He is signed to Top Dawg Entertainment and Interscope Records. He has released two mixtapes and an independent album entitled Setbacks. It reached 100 on the Billboard 200. Schoolboy toured with label mate Kendrick Lamar and rappers Mac Miller and Wiz Khalifa on the Under the Influence tour. His third album Oxymoron is still in works and is expected to be released later this year.

BJ the Chicago Kid
Born Bryan Sledge, singer-songwriter BJ the Chicago Kid sang background for Mary Mary and Usher, and wrote songs for Mary J. Blige before signing to Motown Records. He has written songs for Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Anthony Hamilton, Mario, Warren G, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Toni Braxton, Ramsey Lewis and Busta Rhymes. He is constantly working on music and strongly believes that music is his calling. His debut album, Pineapple Now-Laters, named after his favorite childhood candy, is in works and is set to be release later this year.

DJ Drama
Tyree Cinque Simmons is a Jamaican-Albanian hip-hop artist. Known by his stage name DJ Drama, he is the official DJ for rap artist T.I. Best known for producing mixtapes such as the Gangsta Grillz series and Dedication 2. In 2003, he, DJ Sense and Don Cannon founded Aphilliates Music Group, signing their first rapper, Willie the Kid, after they signed a label deal with Ayslum Records. DJ Drama has released four mixtape albums (Gangsta Grillz: The Album, Gangsta Grillz: The Album (Vol. 2), Third Power, and Quality Street Music).

Joey Badass
Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott is a Brooklyn-born independent American rapper that goes by the name Joey Badass. In High School, he formed the collective Progressive Era or Pro Era with some of his classmates. His first single, “Unorthodox,” off his debut album was released earlier this year. Initially, Jo-Vaughn wanted to do acting in school, but in 9th grade he switched to music.

Lecrae, born Lecrae Moore from Houston, Texas, is a Christian hip-hop artist, entrepreneur, ministry leader, record producer and actor. He is also the co-founder and President of ReachLife Ministires, a non-profit organization. As a solo artist, Lecrae has released six albums (Real Talk, After the Music Stops, Rebel, Rehab, Rehab: The Overdose, Gravity) and one mix-tape (Church Clothes), and as the leader of the group 116 Clique, has released three studio albums and two remix albums. His third album, Rebel, was the first Christian hip-hop album to reach #1 on the gospel chart. His Latest album, Gravity, got Lecrae a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album.
