ASCAP President Paul Williams to Deliver Keynote at Midem

Paul Williams speaks at the 2013 CISAC World Creators Summit

ASCAP President and award-winning songwriter Paul Williams has been announced as a keynote speaker at Midem, the international music business conference set to take place in Cannes, France from June 5th - 8th of 2015.

Central to Williams’s speech will be the great importance of music to our lives. “I want to talk about the social gift that all creators provide,” Williams told Variety. “Gathered at Midem are people who reach into the center of their chest, and others who assist those creators, offering a message that comforts the world.”

He will also focus on the necessity of preserving the economic value of music, for the benefit of music creators and the entire music ecosystem. “I am sitting here in Nashville looking at the skyline, and somewhere in one of those little houses out there on the outskirts of town is a woman writing with an electric keyboard, probably with headphones on so she doesn’t wake the baby in the next room,” he said to Variety. “If she manages to find something in the center of her chest that is honest and real about what her life is like...and is lucky enough to have a hit with it, then she deserves to make a decent living with it.”

Williams will discuss ASCAP’s role in protecting the music and livelihoods of songwriters, composers and publishers worldwide in the digital age. More broadly, he will offer a much-needed reminder that music - and those that write it - are at the heart of the music industry.

Midem Director Bruno Crolot commented: “We are thrilled to welcome Paul Williams as keynote interview of Midem 2015. Midem is the natural home for such legendary music creators, especially when they are as well-versed as Paul in the inner workings of the music business. His presence shows that the core industry is more than ever at the heart of Midem.”

Paul Williams is a Grammy, Golden Globe and Oscar-winning member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, known the world over for classic songs like "The Rainbow Connection," "We've Only Just Begun" and many more. He has earned three Grammys, for "Evergreen (Love Theme from A Star Is Born)," songs from The Muppet Movie and his work on Daft Punk’s 2014 Album of the Year-winning Random Access Memories. Most recently, he collaborated with Gustavo Santaolalla on songs for the hit animated film The Book of Life. As President and Chairman of the Board of ASCAP since 2009, Williams is also a leading spokesman for music creators in the digital age.
