Little known fact: In addition to being a Grammy-nominated composer of more than a dozen films, Ryan Shore is also a certified pilot. So he was the perfect choice to score All Around the World, the new documentary and concert film about pop-R&B boy band Mindless Behavior. We chatted with Shore about his high-flying, dance-centric music for the movie.

From the sound of it, your work for All Around the World was poles apart from a traditional scoring gig. What convinced you to take the assignment?

After hearing about the band and seeing all the great people attached to the film, I knew right away I wanted to be a part of it. The band already has quite a following and over 130 million views on YouTube, and there is a visceral excitement surrounding them and their rise. The director, producers and filmmakers all did an amazing job of capturing that excitement in the film, so I found it to be a very inspiring film to compose for.

What kind of direction did you receive from the director or producers about the score?

The director and producers knew they wanted a score that complements all the concert footage of the band performing their songs, so the creative direction was to not only make sure the music captures the arc and emotional beats of the film, but to also ensure the score feels, in a way, like it's cut from the same cloth as the sound of the band. That direction gave me a very clear idea as to how to go about scoring the film.

There are definitely elements of Mindless Behavior's sound in your score. Was that part of the vision from the beginning? And how did you balance bringing in their modern pop-R&B sound with doing something distinctly you?

I absolutely kept in mind the sound of the band's songs, and that offered quite a bit of inspiration for choosing instruments and music production techniques. From there I changed my focus to the writing itself, and using all of those sounds to underscore each of the moments in the film. There are also some cues I wrote, specifically for some of the more emotional moments, which have a very different sound from the music of the band. For those pieces I chose a much more acoustic instrumentation of piano, guitars, light percussion and electronics, and solo strings.

Did you write all of your cues specifically for the film or were there some you had floating around?

Most of the score was written specifically for the film, however at times there was some previously existing elements I was able to use as a basis for some of the pieces and then expand on them further specifically for the film.

To what extent was the All Around the World score a strictly "Ryan Shore and a computer" affair? Did you bring in any live instrumentalists?

Based on the different kinds of styles and sounds in the score –hip-hop, R&B, pop, etc.– there was quite a bit I was able to do inside the studio without bringing in additional instrumentalists. However, there definitely were also some sections for which I did bring live soloists in to record.

Did you get to work with Mindless Behavior in any capacity?

I didn't, however I did meet the group a few days ago at the premiere here in Los Angeles, and they're awesome group of guys and super talented. I expect we'll be hearing much more from them in the future!
