Emily Wells on Her Dark Score for Stoker

Emily Wells

Emily Wells

Performer, producer and songwriter Emily Wells is a one-woman orchestral/electronic tour de force, with elements of classical instrumentation and folk rawness highlighted in her music as well. Her burgeoning reputation owes much to her hypnotic live show, where, working a looping pedal, Wells plays live drums, guitars, analog synthesizers and beat machines. That same blend of deft composition and hand-wrought quality colors her latest album, Mama. 2013 sees Wells releasing Pillowfight, her collaborative project with producer Dan the Automator, as well as contributing to the soundtrack to the Park Chan-Wook film Stoker, starring Nicole Kidman, released in theaters on Friday, March 1st.

Wells performed at this year's Sundance ASCAP Music Café, where she debuted "Becomes the Color," a song she wrote for Stoker. She talked with us backstage about writing for the film, and how she has grown to love the necessity of playing as a "one-woman band."
