2019 ASCAP Pop Music Awards

Songwriting legends and legends in-the-making had time to shine at the 2019 ASCAP Pop Music Awards, held May 16 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
Jeff Lynne, the guiding light of ELO, received the ASCAP Founders Award from his good friend Joe Walsh (The Eagles, James Gang) before performing a rare acoustic set of ELO classics, with Benmont Tench at the piano. Clem Burke, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie celebrated their ASCAP Golden Note Award with a blistering mini-concert, with songs drawn from throughout 45-year career. Superstar writer-producer Louis Bell accepted Songwriter of the Year award for his six massive hits for Post Malone, Camila Cabello, Selena Gomez and 5SOS. Sony/ATV took home Publisher of the Year, while Kobalt earned its first Independent Publisher of the Year honor.
In one of the night’s most anticipated moments, pop firebrand Billie Eilish and her collaborator/brother, FINNEAS, performed two Billie tunes and a solo song by FINNEAS. Anyone who has listened to the hypnotic music they make together could have expected their mesmerizing performance would be a highlight of the night. But nobody could have predicted their surprise guest: Oscar-winning actress (and Billie superfan) Julia Roberts, who showed up to present them with the ASCAP Vanguard Award.
2018 was a year of milestone achievements for ASCAP members, many of which were recognized at the Pop Awards. The writers and publishers of Drake’s record-breaking single “God’s Plan” won Most Streamed Song of the Year trophies, while Zedd and Stefan Johnson’s “The Middle” - Zedd’s highest-charting single as a primary artist - was named Song of the Year. Emily Warren wowed us with an acoustic version of “New Rules,” the international chart-topping hit she wrote for Dua Lipa.
It was another unforgettable night from the brightest lights in pop music.
