Global ASCAP Family Scores 21 Nominations for 73rd Primetime Emmys

July 14, 2021

Happy day! Nominations for the 73rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards dropped on July 13, and 19 songwriters and composers from the global ASCAP family were recognized for their phenomenal work by the Television Academy with a total of 21 noms across all music categories.

Comedian, ASCAP songwriter and filmmaker extraordinaire Bo Burnham sure did make us some content (open wide!) with his Netflix special Inside. The ASCAP member was nominated twice for his ingenious, uproarious musical stylings. Maestro Michael Abels also took home two nominations for his cerebral musical worldbuilding on the HBO doc series Allen v. Farrow.

Some of ASCAP’s most-decorated members made the Emmys shortlist this year. Raphael Saadiq earned a nom for co-scoring Lovecraft Country, which took home ASCAP Composers’ Choice: TV Score of the Year honors at this year’s ASCAP Screen Music Awards; Steven Price was nominated for his soaring orchestral accompaniment to David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet - this year’s ASCAP Composers’ Choice: Documentary Score of the Year; Siddhartha Khosla earned his third straight Emmy nom for his gorgeous, sensitive music for This Is Us, the same series that earned him the Top Network TV Series award at the 2020 ASCAP awards; British composers Martin Phipps (The Crown) and Tom Howe (Ted Lasso), both ASCAP Screen Awards winners, earned a nomination a piece; and film/TV & musical theatre great Marc Shaiman, an ASCAP Henry Mancini Award recipient, was chosen for his end titles theme for the Soundtrack of Our Lives benefit show.

Lastly - a special shoutout to ASCAP composer Michael Dean Parsons, who earned his first Emmy nomination for his work on the theme to the much beloved Bridgerton. Michael earned The ASCAP Foundation Charlotte V. Bergen Scholarship back in 2013 - we are so proud to see how far he’s come!

The 73rd Annual Emmys will air on September 19 on CBS. Tune in and cheer on all your favorite ASCAP composers!
