EXPO Tips!

How to Make Sure Your ASCAP EXPO Experience Rules Hard

By Etan Rosenbloom, Director & Deputy Editor, Marketing & Communications  •  May 4, 2018

If you’re reading this, you’re probably heading to the ASCAP “I Create Music” EXPO! Woo-hooo! You’ve made a great career decision just by buying tickets. There are a lot more decisions to make over the three days of the EXPO, and after 13 years of putting on the EXPO, we know it can be overwhelming. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Confirm your flight and hotel info

Travel logistics are a pain, especially if you’re bringing your inflatable grand piano and entire Mariachi band along with you. Check in early on your airline, and confirm your hotel reservation in advance.

Pick up your EXPO badge on Sunday

In town early for the EXPO? Avoid the lines and pick up your badge on Sunday night, May 6. The registration desk on the Mezzanine level of the Loews will be open from 5 to 9pm.

Park at Hollywood & Highland

The Hollywood & Highland complex offers the best and cheapest parking in the heart of Hollywood. Only $2 for up to 2 hours with validation from participating shops, restaurants and nightclubs, and $1 for every 15 minutes thereafter, with a daily maximum of $15, and $15 flat rate on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays after 10 pm. Valet Parking is available at the Loews for $20 every 10 hours (no in and out privileges), or $50.60 overnight (including in and out privileges). The parking structure is open 24/7.

Plan your transportation

Los Angeles is huge, but luckily the Loews Hollywood Hotel is centrally located and easy to access via public transportation. The bus and the Metro Red Line both stop right near the hotel - plan your trip at metro.net. Prefer to rideshare? Have your driver drop you off at the Highland entrance to the Loews. And for all you high rollers, there is a helipad at the top of the Loews. Just sayin’.

Get the lay of the land

The Loews is a big hotel, and we’ve got ASCAP EXPO activities happening all over it. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the grounds. The map in your program book should help. And so will our “Freshman Orientation” panel on Monday morning.

Stock up on swag - and put it in a bag

You spent all that time and money creating the perfect you-branded merch - why not give it away at the EXPO? We’ll even give you a swank tote to haul it around in. Pick up yours for free in The ASCAP Room after you get your badge.

Plan out your EXPO schedule

There’s always at least 17 awesome things happening at the EXPO, so pick out your must-see panels in advance, and get there a few minutes early to make sure you get in. Check out the full panel schedule online.

Get to know your panelists

Our EXPO panelists are responsible for some of your favorite music, guaranteed. Head to 2018ascapexpo.sched.com to read their bios and credits so you’ve got something to talk about if you run into them in the bathroom.

Find out who else is coming

Create an online profile to meet your fellow attendees in advance (you can even log in with your Facebook account). Customize your schedule to find out who else is interested in the same panels.

Download your ASCAP Mobile Pass

You’re bound to meet a new collaborator or three at the EXPO. Start off your co-writing relationship right by downloading your ASCAP Mobile Pass. This handy digital tool keeps track of your International Party Identifier (IPI), a unique number assigned to every music creator and publisher in the world. It’s an essential piece of info for music registration, so when it’s time to register the fruits of your new collaboration, open up your Mobile Pass to get your IPI, and use the IPIs you got from your co-writers. Log in to Member Access to download it now!

Everybody get footloose (actually, please don’t)

The Loews is a big hotel and you’ll be hustling from panel to panel a whole lot. Wear comfortable, supportive shoes - you want to leave the EXPO with ideas and inspiration, not blisters!

Pick up a free creator pin (or three) at the Advocacy Booth

Are you a songwriter? Composer? Producer? Music biz pro? All of the above? Show your true colors by wearing our colorful creator pins, available at the Advocacy Booth on the 2nd floor, near the registration desk.

Get your music massaged by Darrell Brown

Hit writer-producer Darrell Brown (we call him our “song whisperer”) is a perennial EXPO favorite. Head down to one of his marathon song feedback sessions on Tuesday for your chance to get your song heard, critiqued and maybe even improved by Darrell and a supportive crowd!

Standing room only? Visit an overflow room.

Did a panel fill up before you could get there? No worries - we’ve set up overflow rooms on the 3rd floor, where you can settle in and watch live video feeds from Hollywood Ballroom A/B/C (in the Echo Park room), Hollywood Ballroom D/E (in the Loz Feliz room) and Mt. Olympus (in the Whitley Heights room).

Recharge your phone (and yourself!) at the ASCAP EXPO Creators Oasis

EXPO days start early and end late, so make sure your phone is fully charged in the morning. Need a recharge? Stop by the charging station at the ASCAP EXPO Creators Oasis, where you can relax and recharge your batteries (literally and figuratively).

Be flexible. Literally.

Ever wanted to do a downward facing dog on the roof of a 20-story building as the sun rises? Now is your chance! We’ve partnered with Ella Yoga to offer EXPO attendees discounted $25 passes to their rooftop SunFLOW yoga experience, each morning of the EXPO. Spots are limited and will sell out quickly - click here to reserve yours.

Share your EXPO experience with #ASCAPEXPO

Let your massive social media following (or, you know, mom) see what an amazing time you’re having at the EXPO! Visit the #ASCAPEXPO photo booth in the ASCAP Creators Oasis, or take a selfie with a new collaborator. We’ll be featuring posts tagged with #ASCAPEXPO on the EXPO Experience screens around the conference.

Add an exclusive EXPO geofilter on Snapchat

Customize your Snapchat story with our special EXPO geofilter while you’re at the Loews for the EXPO.

Be your own secretary

Oscar Wilde once said “Music is the art which is most nigh to tears and memory.” Forego the tears and write down what you want to remember. The ASCAP notebook in your registration bag should help. 😉

Win stuff

See something you like while visiting our EXPO sponsors or attending one of their sessions? You just might win it in our annual raffle! Drop your registration bag ticket into the box in the ASCAP Room, or hand over your business card at a sponsor table, then show up at the Dolby Ballroom on Wednesday at 4:45pm to find out if you’ve won. You don’t have to be in the room to win, but why miss out on your time in the spotlight?

Don’t be that guy

Our panelists have donated their time to help out your career. Show them your appreciation by silencing your phone during the panel, and avoid mobbing them afterwards.

Mix it up

Your fellow EXPOnauts hail from diverse backgrounds and make a wide variety of music. Get in on the cross-genre action, find a new collaborator and forge a brand new genre (Acoustic techno? Minimalist prog-metal? R&Bluegrass?)! We hope you apply that same adventurous spirit to our wide-ranging panels - try schooling yourself on something you’ve never heard about.

Learn your rights

The EXPO is a great place to bring out the music advocate in you. Don’t miss our Membership Meeting on Wednesday morning, where you’ll hear about all the critical legal and legislative issues that are facing music creators today. Stop by our Advocacy Booth to find out how you can help push through important reforms that will benefit music creators, users and fans alike.

Help us make the EXPO Q&As as helpful as possible

Have a burning question to ask during a panel? Please consider whether it will benefit everyone in the room, or just you. Our Q&A sessions are meant to yield valuable information that all of our attendees can apply to their own careers - they’re not the place for pitching your music or telling your life story (that’s what songs are for).

Mix. Mingle. Schmooze.

Music is a social experience! Stop by one of our networking events to make a new friend, or have a drink with your old ones. Check out the online schedule for the full rundown.

Visit our exhibitors

The EXPO will be chock-full of services and vendors who want to help you succeed. These booths are tailor-made for your career. Chat with these nice folks! Find out more about them in the back of your program book, or see the full list online.

Catch a show

What would a music conference be without live music? You can hear your favorite songs from the people who wrote ‘em at the “I Create Music” Center Stage and The Writers Jam, or discover a new favorite at our “EXPO Factor” Attendee Showcase, iStandard Producer & Rapper Showcase or the She Rocks Showcase. You are also more than welcome to start a spontaneous freestyle circle at any point (wouldn’t be the first time).

Say hello to an ASCAP staffer

The EXPO is a great place to finally meet that ASCAP employee who’s helped you out over the phone so many times. Can’t find us on the EXPO floor? The ASCAP Room is always a good spot to find an ASCAP Global Writer & Publisher Services employee. We’re here for you!

Conserve your energy

You’ll be out and about for many hours at a time. Take it all in, but pace yourself! And speaking of which...

Bon appetit!

You came to the EXPO because you’re hungry for knowledge, but don’t forget about actual food! There are plenty of eateries at the Hollywood & Highland complex, and a ton more great options within easy walking distance.

Are you in recovery - or thinking about it?

You’re not alone. Stop by the MusiCares Safe Harbor Room for 12-step support meetings, fellowship and more. It’s open each day of the EXPO in room 1912, 10am -6pm on Monday & Tuesday, 10am - 4pm on Wednesday.

Stay tuned for updates

If there are any changes to the printed schedule, we’ll let you know via our Twitter (@ascapexpo), Instagram (@ascap) and Facebook (@ascapexpo) accounts. Follow and like us, why don’tcha?

Your EXPO badge is your best friend

Your badge is the only way to access the magical wonderland that is the ASCAP EXPO. Take good care of it - a replacement will cost you the same as the old one.

Show your ASCAP pride

You’ll find exclusive ASCAP EXPO shirts and other goodies for sale at the ASCAP EXPO Boutique, on the 3rd floor near the escalator. And yes, we do take plastic!

Watch and learn on your own time with EXPO Video Access!

Watch all the EXPO panels you missed and relive your favorite moments with EXPO Video Access, available for free with your EXPO registration! We’ll hit you up when it’s ready after the EXPO.
