Musical Forces United by A Solemn Quest for Peace
November 15, 2017
A busy and rewarding Veteran’s Day weekend for Seattle-based ASCAP composer John Muehleisen, in town for the East Coast premiere of his full concert-length oratorio But Who Shall Return Us Our Children? -A Kipling Passion. With the 2018 centennial anniversary of the World War I Armistice now upon us, listeners in both New York City and Montclair, New Jersey were treated to back-to-back performances of this eloquent contribution to the choral literature; and a most timely addition as well with its focus upon the ravages of war as experienced by the family of English poet Rudyard Kipling. Part of an ongoing series concentrating upon music and poetry of nations involved in the “Great War,” Deborah Simpkin-King, led the combined forces of her own choral ensemble Ember together with the Englewood Chamber Players.
