Whether exploring the pains of adolescence, the consequences of meddling with love or the way people come together amid tragedy, ASCAP members brought that Broadway razzle-dazzle to the 2017 Tony Awards, and fueled many of the night’s biggest winners.
Just a few months after winning the Oscar for their music to La La Land, ASCAP songwriting team Benj Pasek & Justin Paul got one step closer to an EGOT with a Tony for Best Score for the Broadway phenomenon Dear Evan Hansen. The acclaimed musical took home six total Tonys, including Best New Musical.
The new production of Hello Dolly!, with music and lyrics by ASCAP musical theatre legend Jerry Herman, won the award for Best Musical Revival - one of four Tonys it took home.
The War and Peace adaptation Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, whose ASCAP creator Dave Malloy was nominated for three Tonys, took home two. And the acclaimed 9/11 musical Come From Away, with book and music by ASCAP members Irene Sankoff and David Hein, clinched the Tony for Best Direction.
All in all, the Tonys were a sublime display of ASCAP members continuing to innovate within the world of Broadway.
