New Members: Lewis Del Mar

“Can you please sit the f**k down?” sings Lewis Del Mar’s Danny Miller. It’s a brash way to start off the experimental folk-pop duo’s first single “Loud(y),” a #1 viral hit on Hype Machine, currently in the Top 25 at alternative radio. Then again, this is the kind of song that commands attention. Miller’s acoustic guitar licks collide with growling synth lines, found sounds and wild percussion from drummer/producer Max Harwood. It all congeals into one of those choruses that takes up permanent residence in your cranium - no wonder The New York Times hailed “Loud(y)” as a “clattering, profane mixed-media anthem.”

That same raw, globally-minded mix of sounds pervades Lewis Del Mar’s debut EP, released in January on the Columbia imprint Startime International. It’s a reflection of Miller and Harwood’s adopted home of Rockaway Beach, New York. You can hear both the laid-back surf and industrial grit of the neighborhood in their sound. It’s a sound borne equally of experimentation and sampling culture.

Since the EP release, Lewis Del Mar have toured their butts off, rocked the international festival circuit (including appearances at Lollapalooza, Outside Lands and ACL), gigged with BØRNS, Miike Snow, Glass Animals and Foals and released their full-length debut album in October. In the meantime, they became card-carrying ASCAP members. Said Miller about the move: “ASCAP is good ppl. They are family now. Glad to know they have our back.”
