ASCAP hosted its eighth annual “Women Behind the Music” series on October 12 at Bardot in Los Angeles. This year’s honorees were a group of influential and powerful women who have excelled in what many perceive as a male-dominated entertainment industry: ASCAP songwriter Priscilla Renea (Nick Jonas’ “Bacon,” Miranda Lambert’s “Something Bad” featuring Carrie Underwood, Chris Brown’s “Don’t Wake Me Up” and Madonna’s “Love Spent,” and “Gang Bang”), music executive Dominique Dunn (Vice President of Publishing at Roc Nation) and talent manager
Priscilla Renea kicked off the event with a captivating acoustic medley performance of her hit songs, including "Worth It" (Fifth Harmony), "California King Bed" (Rihanna), "Wake Me Up" (Aloe Blacc), and "Timber" (Pitbull featuring Ke$ha).
ASCAP’s Moya Nkruma moderated a panel with all three honorees about their experiences and individual journeys in entertainment. Priscilla Renea spoke about her start in the music industry and working on the art of her craft. Eufaula Garrett provided insight on her successful deals with client Andre 3000, and Roc Nation's VP of Publishing Dominique Dunn discussed her compelling A&R work for artists Beyonce, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, and Kanye West.
Among the notable attendees were artist Bridget Kelly, Stereotypes producer Ray Romulus, producer Brian Kennedy, VP of A&R at Warner/Chappell Ryan Press and Roc Nation's Tyran "Ty Ty" Smith and Chaka Pilgrim.
The evening ended with a post cocktail reception and DJ Niena Drake's sounds set the lively atmosphere throughout the event for more than 200 attendees. Sponsors included MAC Cosmetics, Guitar Center, Unique London, Luxe Therapy, Hair Cocktails, Sashay Wax, and JV Decor.
