ASCAP Celebrates Pride 2021

June 4, 2021

The ASCAP community draws its strength from our diversity. Thank you to our LGBTQ+ members who inspire us to embrace our identities and live out loud. You add color to our lives and magic to our music. ASCAP is proud to support you and fight for you, during Pride Month and every other month, too.

Scroll down for discussions with some of our beloved LGBTQ+ members, including a special episode of VERSED: The ASCAP Podcast with Rufus Wainwright. We've also put together a genre-spanning playlist of music by LGBTQ+ ASCAP members.

Happy Pride!

Labelless: Songwriting Without Borders

Music creators today are challenging the idea that to be successful, you need to conform to standard constructs of gender identity and sexual orientation, as well as dated music industry ideals regarding genre. Now, fearless creators are gaining fans and rising to the top of the charts by being their unique selves. Join us for a discussion with Madeline The Person, Allison Ponthier and The Blossom – three bold, up-and-coming music creators who have found success by following their own paths.

Writing Proud: How to Harness the Power of Self-Expression

Music is a powerful tool for self-expression. But for music creators in the LGBTQ+ community – especially creators still exploring their own identities – it can be difficult to decide how much of yourself to put into your music. We’ve convened a roundtable with Gizzle, Leland and Darrell Brown – three out and proud music creators who have crafted major songs for pop and hip-hop stars, country greats and drag queens, and themselves. These incredible songwriters will share their lived experiences of being gay within their sectors of the music industry; how it’s impacted the music they write, and how their music has in turn changed how they see themselves. They’ll also offer valuable advice – for creators of all stripes – about how to express and explore your authentic self through your music.
