Sundance 2021 Composer Spotlight: Arnaud van Vliet
Film: Fire in the Mountains
Arnaud van Vliet is a composer and performing musician living in Johannesburg, South Africa. Although he is trained as a classical guitarist his music spans a broad range of styles. He has been involved as a producer, arranger and performer on a number of studio albums and his guitar playing features on many South African television, film and documentary soundtracks. Since 2012, he has collaborated with animation filmmaker and graphic artist Naomi van Niekerk under the name Dryfsand, creating multi-disciplinary works for screen and stage. Their most recent work The Alchemy of Words (2017), a song cycle of 10 poems by Artur Rimbaud, commissioned by The French Institute of South Africa, toured Southern Africa and France (2018/19). He has composed the music for a number of short films. The animated film An Ordinary Blue Monday directed by Naomi van Niekerk received the award for Best First Film at the Annecy Festival International du Film D’Animation (2016). Fire in the Mountains, directed by Ajitpal Singh, is his first feature film.
