Sundance 2020 Composer Spotlight: Mark Henry Phillips
Film: Betye Saar: Taking Care of Business
Mark Henry Phillips left a career in journalism a decade ago to become a full-time composer. He's scored other Sundance selections like Hold On and Bayard and Me as well as films like Most Likely to Murder (Lionsgate), Whiteout and Strays. He's become one of the leading composers in the podcast world, scoring the first seasons of Serial, Homecoming, StartUp, and Passenger List. Phillips makes Beatles-esque indie pop under the name Sono Oto and multiple tracks from his latest album Inheritance have been used in network TV shows and commercials. He also works as a sound designer and has designed films like the Academy Award-nominated Cutie and the Boxer, Teenage, A Teacher, and Ballet 422. He’s currently developing a scripted-fiction podcast that will combine his work in journalism, film and music into one project.
