Joel Pickard

Joel Pickard is a composer, sound designer, and performer. He studied composition at Mills College in Oakland with Fred Frith and Pauline Oliveros, classical guitar at Bethel College in St. Paul with David Crittendon, and cello with Anna Fritz. Recent work includes the documentary The Joneses as well as the eighth season of the PBS arts show ART21: Art In The Twenty-First Century. Joel is currently creating a sound installation for the Freer gallery at The Smithsonian. In addition to film work, Joel creates music and sound design for HBO, Showtime, the Independent Film Channel, and commercial clients such as Kodak, Audi, Mercedes and Nike. His multi speaker audio installation for The New York Times showcased their 2015 Op-Doc short film series. His last recording, Motel Chronicles, is a sparse cinematic country noir soundtrack featuring pedal steel guitar. Originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota Joel currently lives in Portland, Oregon.
