The ASCAP music license covers a variety of music uses present on websites and mobile apps.
Below are examples of music uses covered by our license:
Audio-only content featuring music, whether in the background, as part of a playlist pre-programmed by you or made available for users to select the music they want to hear when they want to hear it.
Music included in audio-visual content. Please note that additional permissions may be required for making music available in this way. Please view our checklist for using music in videos for additional information on the necessary permissions required.
Livestreams hosted via your website or mobile app that include music.
NOTE: If the music or videos on your website or app is actually accessed through an embeddable media player from a third-party service such as YouTube, Soundcloud, Spotify, Twitch, etc., you may not need an ASCAP music license for that particular music use. For more information about third-party players and what the ASCAP license provides, please click here for our FAQ.
An ASCAP license is affordable and easy to understand.
The fees under our basic streaming license are based on two criteria: The number of yearly sessions that take place on your platforms/service and the annual revenue generated by your platform. A session is a single, continuous visit to the website/mobile app, regardless of the length of the visit. For example, if a user accesses your service at 10:00 AM and stays until 11:00 AM, that would count as one session. Revenue includes all revenue generated by your service, including fees paid by sponsors for advertisements and by users to subscribe to the service.
Below is the pricing grid for our basic license agreement, which will help you determine the fee for your music license:
As you can see, our lowest tier of license fees, which covers most digital services, is less than $1 per day!
For platforms that exceed the session or revenue threshold, ASCAP offers an array of license agreements tailored to different types of music use. Just click on the link below to get started with purchasing your license!
