El Premio ASCAP 2018

The Latin music community gathered from all corners of the globe to celebrate the biggest Latin music of 2017 at the 26th annual ASCAP Latin Awards, held on March 6 at the Marriott Marquis in New York. Sony Music Latin Chairman & CEO Afo Verde presented the ASCAP Vanguard Award to writer-producer Eduardo Cabra aka Visitante, from Calle 13 and Trending Tropics, for a career full of imaginative, forward-thinking music. Reggaeton hitmakers Gente de Zona took home the Golden Note Award, Farruko was named Songwriter-Artist of the Year and Regional Mexican golden boy Joss Favela earned his third straight Songwriter of the Year award, presented by ASCAP President Paul Williams. Song of the Year went to “Despacito,” the titanic Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee co-written by ASCAP members Justin Bieber and Jason "Poo Bear" Boyd. Warner/Chappell was named Publisher of the Year, and BMG was named Independent Music Publisher of the Year for the second year in a row.

The songs we honored at El Premio ASCAP 2018 spanned the genre spectrum, and the numerous performances at El Premio ASCAP 2018 highlighted the evolution and diversity of Latin music, too. Brothers Daniel Santacruz & Manny Cruz sang their bachata hit “Deja Vu” for Prince Royce & Shakira; Jowell y Randy offered a rollicking performance of their reggaeton hit “Bonita;” Favela played three of his award-winning regional Mexican songs. Singer-songwriter Manuel Medrano demonstrated why he was named Best New Artist at the 2016 Latin Grammys, and in one of the night’s most anticipated moments, Danny Ocean gave a passionate performance of his massive viral pop hit “Me Rehuso.” The audience was also treated to terrific performances from Lola Jane, Ella Bric, Karol G and Vicente García. As Gente de Zona closed the show on a high note, bringing the audience to its feet with a live medley of “Si No Vuelves” and “Somos Tu Y Yo,” we were all reminded of the power of Latin music to unite us, move us, make us feel.
