Alex Winkler is a composer who writes in nearly every style of music. His early influences from rock and jazz keep him interested in combining idioms from various musical genres. Today, Alex is a recent graduate of the University of Houston Moores School of Music. There he studied composition with Rob Smith and Marcus Maroney and piano with renowned pianist Tali Morgulis and contest-winner Geraldine Ong. In addition, Alex has received mentorship from composers and doctoral graduates of Rice University Aaron Alon and Joel Stein as well as internationally acclaimed songwriter Jeff Franzel. Past awards and honors include being featured in both the Aletheia Arts Journal and the Unified Underground Magazine, received 2nd place in the Robert Avalon Composition Competition as well as the Undergraduate winner of UH’s Louisa Sarofim Composition Contest. Due to his passion for blurring the lines between genres of music, Alex engages in many diverse projects at once. Current projects include: a full-length musical theater work (“Liberators” the Musical), several film scoring projects, a multi-movement work for chamber orchestra and a big band arrangement for the MSM Jazz Orchestra.
