Vanguard Award: Diplo

Diplo (born Wesley Pentz) is a Grammy-nominated DJ and producer known for his irreverent blending of dance, pop and hip-hop with colorful styles from around the world. His 2004 debut album, Florida, was praised by the underground community and caught the attention of then-new act M.I.A. The two later partnered to release a well-received mixtape, bolstering Diplo’s reputation as a musical trendspotter. Diplo and M.I.A. created the Grammy-nominated track “Paper Planes,” which hit #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over 3 million copies. In 2006, Diplo founded record label Mad Decent, which has since released music by Baauer, Santigold, Bonde do Rolê, Peter Bjorn & John, Lil' Jon, Gucci Mane and more. Presently, Diplo continues to secure credits with big names like Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, Beyoncé, Shakira, Lil Wayne, No Doubt, Bruno Mars, Azealia Banks, Robyn, Usher and Snoop Lion. His dancehall project Major Lazer is scheduled to release its new album Free the Universe this month. We are proud to honor this musical globetrotter with the ASCAP Vanguard Award.
