New York, NY, November 8, 2006: As part of the national songwriting mentorship program, ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES, Latin music songwriter and recording artist Roberto Poveda will call on students at two elementary schools in New York City on November 9 and 15, 2006 to teach them about the craft of songwriting.

Over 60 third to sixth grade students at PS 180 Hugo Newman (370 West 120th Street) and PS 161 Don Pedro Albizu Campos (499 W. 133rd Street) will participate in the two-day program, which is designed to provide an engaging and inspiring way for kids to express themselves through songwriting, while teaching them to value and respect their own creative work and that of others.

America SCORES is an after-school program that uses soccer and poetry to inspire literacy, healthy living and civic responsibility among urban youth. As part of the ASCAP Songwriter Residency program, Roberto will focus on the students' creative work as a way to teach them about the craft of songwriting. He will visit PS 180 Hugo Newman on November 9 and PS 161 Don Pedro Albizu Campos on November 15 from 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

ASCAP Songwriter Residency @ America SCORES launched in Washington D.C. on October 25, 2006. ASCAP songwriters featured in the program have included multiple Grammy Award-winning children's music songwriters Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, hip-hop songwriter Lysette Titi and Americana-rock songwriter John Francis. The ASCAP Foundation, a public charity dedicated to supporting music education and talent development programs, funds the program.

ROBERTO POVEDA is without a doubt a performer with the unique ability of reaching deep down into his Cuban roots to deliver soulful, eclectic, and hypnotizing songs, which he both writes and performs with the passion of a true artist. Poveda's unique approach in combining the various Cuban music forms of son, bolero, rumba, timba, jazz, R&B and rap has resulted in a sound all of his own. His first U.S. album, Son Electrico, features 10 tracks, all written by Poveda. The results range from the updated country son to the Cuban folk-rock styles of Poveda's Cuban contemporaries.
