ASCAP MEMBERS GIVE SOCIETY A GREAT 90TH BIRTHDAY GIFT WITH SWEEP OF
SONGWRITING & COMPOSITION GRAMMY AWARDSASCAP Members
Winning Multiple Awards Include Beyoncé, OutKast,
Justin Timberlake, Luther Vandross, Jay-Z and June Carter
Cash
(The American
Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) marks
its 90th anniversary with record-breaking revenues ($668
million in 2003) and with an incredible showing by its
songwriter and composer members at the recent Grammy
Awards, sweeping almost every songwriting and composing
honor. In addition, ASCAP members captured such top
honors as Song of the Year (Richard Marx and
Luther Vandross), Record of the Year (Coldplay),
and Album of the Year (OutKast), and
multi-award winning members of ASCAP included Beyoncé,
Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, Luther Vandross and
the late June Carter Cash. All told,
57 ASCAP members received a total of 69 honors at the
music industry's most prestigious annual event.
Commenting on the ASCAP showing, ASCAP President &
Chairman Marilyn Bergman said, "We at ASCAP take
enormous pride in the musical achievements of our members.
Their unparalleled success at this year's Grammy
Awards, particularly in the categories representing
songwriting and musical composition, highlights the
fact that ASCAP has always been and remains the home
of musical creativity at its best."

categories are as follows:

Best R&B Song: Beyoncé and Jay-Z

Best Rap Song: Luis Resto for "Lose

Best Country Song: Jim "Moose" Brown

Best Musical Show Album: Jule Styne and Stephen
Sondheim for Gypsy
Best Score Soundtrack: Howard Shore
for The Lord Of The Rings - The Two Towers
Best Song from a Motion Picture Christopher
Guest, Eugene Levy and Michael McKean for "A
Mighty Wind" (from A Mighty Wind)
Best Classical Contemporary Composition: Dominick
Argento for Argento: Casa Guidi
February 13, 2004 marks the 90th anniversary of the
founding of ASCAP. As the world's largest performing
rights organization, ASCAP has over 175,000 composer,
lyricist and music publisher members representing all
genres of music. ASCAP is committed to protecting the
rights of its members by licensing and collecting royalties
for the public performance of their copyrighted works,
and then distributing these fees to the Society's
members based on performances. ASCAP's Board of
Directors is made up solely of writers and publishers,
elected by the membership every two years.
