ASCAP Members Score 18 Tony Nominations

Nominations for the 2013 Tony Awards have been announced, and ASCAP members have once again made an impressive showing in the group of theatre greats.

Kinky Boots, The Musical racked up the most nominations – 13 in total – for which ASCAP member and noted actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein is nominated for Best Book of a Musical. Kinky Boots tells the story of a struggling shoemaker and his drag queen business partner, and is based on the 2005 film of the same name.

In a close second is Matilda, The Musical, which nabbed 12 nominations, including Best Musical. ASCAP’s Chris Nightingale is nominated for his work on the show in the category of Best Orchestrations.

ASCAP writing team Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are nominated for Best Original Score for A Christmas Story, The Musical. The show is the Broadway adaptation of the 1983 holiday film, and tells the story of a boy’s desperate quest to get the perfect Christmas present – an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200-shot Range Model Air Rifle.

The classic Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella scored 9 nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical. Legendary ASCAP musical theatre writing team Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II wrote the music for the show, with Rodgers composing the music and Hammerstein writing the lyrics. The duo are widely considered to be one of the greatest songwriting partnerships of the 20th century, having previously collected 34 Tony Awards, 15 Academy Awards, the Pulitzer Prize and two Grammy Awards. ASCAP’s Douglas Carter Beane and Danny Troob are also nominated for their work on the musical in the categories of Best Book of a Musical and Best Orchestrations, respectively.

The American Theatre Wing’s 67th Annual Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards will celebrate theatre professionals for distinguished achievement. The Tony is one of the most coveted awards in the entertainment industry and the annual telecast is considered one of the most prestigious programs on television. The nominees were selected by an independent committee of 24 theatre professionals appointed by the Tony Awards Administration Committee.

The Tony Awards will be broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall on CBS, Sunday, June 9th, 8:00 – 11:00pm (ET/PT time delay).

Congratulations to all of our nominees!
