"On the Come Up" - April Edition

BJ the Chicago Kid

Artist BJ the Chicago Kid shows “On the Come Up” why he’s far from being a kid in this industry.

Clearly, the name says it all, but what part of Chicago are you originally from?

BJ the Chicago Kid: I’m from southeast Chicago.

What was your first introduction into the music industry?

BJ: Picnics and just music around the house. Growing up as a kid, everyone played music – that was my introduction to it.

What differentiates you from other artists?

BJ: My point of view, my vocal ability, my approach to a song – all that makes me who I am over another artist.

What are you currently working on?

BJ: I’m working on my debut album on Motown Records.

What inspires you to create music?

BJ: Life. There are lots of things that inspire me, but life, right now [is what inspires me]. If there wasn’t any music for me, I’d definitely be in a crazy house.

Who is your musical mentor and why?

BJ: My brothers, Aaron Sledge and Harold Lilly. Those two guys are huge influences.

What advice do you have for up-and-coming artists?

BJ: Make sure this is what you want to do and if it is, get it by any means necessary, without the negativity and without ruining your life. Become a student of the game.
