The 55th Grammy Awards celebrated a monumental year in music with ASCAP members Jay-Z and Skrillex each winning three awards. fun. took home two of the four top categories with Song of the Year (“We Are Young”) and Best New Artist. A wide range of ASCAP members were awarded two Grammys each: jazz vocalist/bassist Esperanza Spalding; Kimbra (APRA), including Record of the Year for “Somebody That I Used To Know;” and Christian artist Matt Redman (PRS). ASCAP members also dominated the other Song awards given to songwriters: Best Rock Song to Brian Burton (Danger Mouse) for “Lonely Boy,” Best R&B Song to Miguel for “Adorn,” Best Rap Song to Jay-Z for “N*****s In Paris,” Best Country Song to Josh Kear and Chris Tompkins for “Blown Away,” Best Gospel Song to Erica Campbell, Tina Campbell and Warryn Campbell for “Go Get It,” and, in a rare tie, Best Contemporary Christian Music Song to Matt Redman (PRS) for "10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)" and Micah Massey for "Your Presence Is Heaven."
The Grammy festivities had a number of performance highlights, such as the return to the stage of Justin Timberlake. The show closed with powerful tributes to Bob Marley by Bruno Mars and Ziggy Marley, and the Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch by Grammy host LL Cool J.
The Recording Academy's 2013 Special Merit Awards recipients for Lifetime Achievement Awards were Glenn Gould (SOCAN), Patti Page, Ravi Shankar and the Temptations. The Trustees Awards, which recognize contributions in areas other than performance, will go to ASCAP Board Member and former President Marilyn Bergman and her husband Alan Bergman as well as Alan Livingston.
