Jimmy Cobb and Snooky Young Honored as Jazz Masters
The National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowships are the highest honors that our government bestows upon jazz musicians. The 2009 ASCAP members receiving Jazz Masters Fellowships are drummer James "Jimmy" Cobb and trumpeter Eugene Edward "Snooky" Young. Jimmy Cobb has worked extensively with a wide range of artists, including nearly all of the most well known names in the Jazz world. His most famous work is on Miles Davis' Kind of Blue and Cobb is the last surviving player from the session. "Snooky" Young is known for his mastery of the plunger mute. Young was lead trumpeter of the Jimmie Lunceford followed by stints with Count Basie and Lionel Hampton. His longest engagement was with NBC, where as a studio trumpeter he joined the Tonight Show Band in 1967 and stayed with them until 1992.
