Derek Bermel Receives Alpert Award
In May, Derek Bermel received the 2008 Alpert Award in the Arts for "experimenters who are challenging and transforming art, their respective disciplines, and society."Also in May, he received the American Music Center's Trailblazer Award, recognizing his adventurous compositions and his mentoring of young composers through the New York Youth Symphony's Making Score program, which is hosted by ASCAP and the League of American Orchestras, An orchestral recording of his, performed by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) with Gil Rose conducting, will be released on BMOP/sound. The release features Bermel as soloist in his clarinet concerto "Voices."
