ASCAP Foundation

Irving Burgie presented the first ASCAP Foundation Irving Burgie Scholarship at the 2006 ASCAP Foundation Awards ceremony to Janet Onyenucheya, a LaGuardia High School graduate who grew up in the Bronx and now studies voice and music business at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

The ASCAP Foundation Irving Burgie Scholarship

Irving Burgie, a great composer of Caribbean music, has established a new scholarship to be presented annually to an African-American songwriter from New York City. The ASCAP Foundation Irving Burgie Scholarship alternates between Berklee College of Music and the University of Southern California. Irving Burgie's songs, published by Cherry Lane Music Publishing Co., include "Jamaica Farewell," "Day- O" and "Island in the Sun." He wrote eight of the songs on Harry Belafonte's Calypso, the first LP ever to sell one million copies.
