Sebastian Currier

Currier Wins 2007 Grawemeyer Award

Sebastian Currier has been honored with the prestigious Grawemeyer Award in Musical Composition for his work, Static, which was commissioned by Copland House for its resident Music from Copland House ensemble, with funds from Meet the Composer's Commissioning Music/USA program. The honor solidifies Currier's status as one of today's pre-eminent composers, who has long been recognized for his imaginative and intriguing music. The composition, lasting nearly 30 minutes and scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano, is the only chamber work to receive the Grawemeyer Award, since Gyorgy Ligeti's nowclassic Piano Etudes 20 years ago. The Grawemeyer Award is one of the top international honors in music, carrying a prize of $200,000. Currier takes his place among previous ASCAP and affiliated winners, including Witold Lutoslawski, John Corigliano, Aaron Jay Kernis, Toru Takemitsu, Gyorgy Kurtag, and Krzysztof Penderecki.
