The Kennedy Center Presents "Jazz In Our Time" and
Honors Living Legends


In March, the Kennedy Center presented a "Jazz in Our Time" Festival, comprising twelve concerts, which featured performances by Nancy Wilson, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, violinist Regina Carter, drummer T.S. Monk, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, Ahmad Jamal, Jimmy Heath, the Hank Jones Quartet, vocalist Roberta Gambarini, Paquito D'Rivera and Clark Terry and others.

As part of the event, the Kennedy Center honored several artists with the "Living Legend Jazz Award, including: Toshiko Akiyoshi, pianist; and bandleader David Baker, conductor/artistic director of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra; Louie Bellson, drummer; Bob Brookmeyer, trombonist ;Dave Brubeck, pianist; Ron Carter, bassist; Ornette Coleman, saxophonist; John Dankworth, saxophonist; Buddy DeFranco, clarinetist; Paquito D'Rivera, clarinetist; Frank Foster, saxophonist; Curtis Fuller, trombonist; Benny Golson, saxophonist; Jim Hall, guitarist; Chico Hamilton, drummer; Slide Hampton, trombonist; Barry Harris, pianist; Jimmy Heath, saxophonist; Jon Hendricks, vocalist; Freddie Hubbard, trumpeter; Ahmad Jamal, pianist; Hank Jones, pianist; Cleo Laine, vocalist; Michel Legrand, pianist; Abbey Lincoln, vocalist; Marian McPartland, pianist; James Moody, saxophonist; Oscar Peterson, pianist; Jimmy Scott, vocalist; Billy Taylor, pianist; Cecil Taylor, pianist; Clark Terry, trumpeter; Frank Wess, saxophonist and flutist; Randy Weston, pianist; Gerald Wilson, composer/arranger; Nancy Wilson, vocalist; and Phil Woods, saxophonist.
