Out of the ashes of the Pacific Northwest band Carissa's Wierd, two of its members - Ben Bridwell (guitar/vocals) and Mat Brooke (guitar) - formed Band of Horses as a continuation of their songwriting collaborations that had begun a decade prior. In their native Seattle, at one of their first shows, they found themselves opening for a band on acclaimed indie label Sub Pop. The record staff in the audience took note of the epic, deeply rich rock, which veers from intense to dreamy within a song, and signed them. The debut LP, Everything All the Time, layers Bridwell's reverb drenched vocals with towering guitar driven songs that are emotionally sensitive, contemplative and instantly anthemic. The album's sweeping tracks, such as "The Funeral" and "The Great Salt Lake," have attracted heaps of fans and buzz within the rock scene. With a recent three-night sold out run in the New York City area, an upcoming tour of European festivals and a big Fall US tour, 2006 - despite what the Chinese zodiac might state - looks to be the year of the horse.
