Legally Blonde on Broadway

ASCAP members Larry O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin have been selected to write the music and lyrics for Legally Blonde - The Musical. Based on the hit MGM feature film and Amanda Brown's novel, Legally Blonde tells the story of Elle Woods, Bel Air's favorite pink-clad blonde, and her equally stylish Chihuahua, Bruiser. After Elle's boyfriend dumps her at graduation, she gets accepted into Harvard Law School to win him back, then discovers that she has far more legal savvy than she ever imagined.

O'Keefe and Benjamin have collaborated on a musical version of the book, Sarah, Plain and Tall, seen Off-Broadway, and Mice, the first of a trio of musicals known as 3hree.

O'Keefe's highest-profile show is Off-Broadway's Bat Boy, which is being produced across the country. He has contributed songs and scores to several films including The Cat in the Hat, The Daily Show, and Every Night and Twice On Sundays, and is currently creating Drop Everything: A Clown Show with Fool Moon co-star David Shiner. O'Keefe is a recipient of the 2004 Kleban Award for excellence in musical theatre writing, the 2001 ASCAP Richard Rodgers New Horizon Award, and the 2001 Jonathan Larson Foundation Award.

In addition to her collaborations with O'Keefe, Benjamin has written scripts for WB Network program Unhappily Ever After. She received the Kleban Award in 2003 as "the most promising lyricist in America," and also received a 2003 Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation Grant.
