The World Premiere of Like Jazz

Marilyn and Alan Bergman, Cy Coleman Collaborate on a New Musical

Hailed by the Los Angeles Times as a "dream team of veteran collaborators," lyricists Marilyn and Alan Bergman, composer Cy Coleman and book writer Larry Gelbart, have created a new musical, Like Jazz. The show, directed by Gordon Davidson with musical staging and choreography by Pat Birch, had its world premiere on December 3 at L.A.’s Mark Taper Forum.

A musical tribute to the indelible influence that jazz has had on people, places and things and a glimpse into the interior world of the jazz artist, Like Jazz features a big band, world class singers and performers who can sing, dance and play it all.

The premiere cast featured musical luminaries such as Patti Austin, Harry Groener, Jack Sheldon and Lillias White. However, the true stars of this show are the 18 new songs that the Bergmans and Coleman have crafted; "He Was Cool," "Scattitude," "In Miami," "A Little Trav’lin Music," "The Double Life of Billy T.," "Music That You Know By Heart" and "Before We Lose the Light," to name a few. Songs that the L.A. Times says, ‘gleam with polish and panache."

Song Soup

On October 8th, ASCAP presented the first installment of a new showcase series and charity benefit, Song Soup, at LA's famed Largo club. The series, hosted by singer/songwriter and actor John Doe, features an established writer and an up-and-coming writer performing separately and together. The debut event featured Doe with guests Nonesuch recording artist Sam Phillips (who also scores TV's “Gilmore Girls”) and up-and-coming singer/songwriter Tom Brosseau. The sell-out event benefited the Musician's Assistance Program (MAP), with 100% of the door going to the charity.
