Chris Thile (The Punch Brothers & Nickel Creek)
Lower East side resident Chris Thile is best known as the mandolin virtuoso of the genre bending acoustic group Nickel Creek. With that band on indefinite hiatus ("18 years is enough for now." says Chris.) he has turned his attention to Punch Brothers, the innovative new group who released their first album on Nonesuch Records in February. The centerpiece of the album is a four- movement 40 minute suite called "The Blind Leaving the Blind" which takes a giant leap towards achieving Chris's stated goal of combining folk and formal music.
"Few musicians, well, none—have intertwined bluegrass instrumentation and spontaneity in the strictures of modern classical ... As a portrait of an artist defining his musical territory ... it is remarkable."
