THE PEOPLE SPEAK: Voices ofA People's History of the United States
Voices of a People's History of the United States (the basis of the forthcoming documentary
The People Speak) brings to light little known voices from U.S. history. By giving public expression to rebels, dissenters, and visionaries from our past and present we work to educate and inspire a new generation of people working for social justice. The live performance will feature readings by Josh Brolin, Melissa Leo, Benjamin Bratt, and Q'orianka Kilcher, musical performances by Wyclef Jean and Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes, and narration by Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove.
"What is common to all these voices is that they have mostly been shut out of the orthodox histories, the major media, the standard textbooks, the controlled culture. The result of having our history dominated by presidents and generals and other 'important' people is to create a passive citizenry, not knowing its own powers. History, looked at under the surface, tells a different story. Whenever injustices have been remedied, wars halted, it has been because 'unimportant' people spoke up and brought democracy alive." - Howard Zinn, author of
