The ASCAP Foundation and The Heineken
Music Initiative are pleased to announce
the recipients of the 2004 Heineken Music Initiative/ASCAP
Foundation R&B Grant program.
This is the third year that the program recognizes
the talents of up-and-coming songwriters in
key music markets across the country, and provides
them with encouragement to further develop their
careers in music. The songwriter (or songwriters)
of the winning song from each of the markets
receives a $2,500 grant.
The recipients and their winning song titles
are:

DoT Wilson
Song Title: "De Ja Vu"
"THE.DoT,"
born Dorothy Wilson in Germany,
has written and arranged
over 300 songs ranging from R&B and
pop, to rock, hip-hop and reggae.
As lead singer of Symphonii(c), DoT has
opened for Faith Evans, OutKast,
GoodieMoB and P.Diddy, among others. She has won
several awards both with the group
and individually for her songwriting.
In 2001, DoT returned to Germany for a year where she wrote and arranged songs for several
European reggae artists resulting in a single, that she co-wrote, being released in Austria. Her current single, "Euphoria,"
reached number three on the charts of the Austrlian MP3.com website.

David Burns and Stewart McKenzie
Song Title: "Judging You"
Meeting
through a mutual friend, David Burns
convinced Stewart McKenzie to record
some tracks with him, which resulted in the the pair forming The McKenzie Burns Project. Burns was
born and raised in Illinois and
is a self-taught keyboard player.
During college, he began creating
R&B songs using computers and
went on to receive a Masters in
Computer Science. Stewart was born
in Illinois and raised in Delaware.
He taught himself how to play
drums, guitar and bass and has been
composing and playing music since
high school. Stewart received
a B.A. in Sociology and a M.A. in
Urban Affairs and Public Policy
from the University of Delaware.

Paul Dateh
Song Title: "She Ain't Comin'
Back"
Paul
Dateh has had the gift of perfect
pitch since age four. At only twenty-two
years old, his talents range from
songwriting to singing to playing
keyboards and violin to arranging
and producing. Armed with fourteen
years of Classical training in violin
and a Bachelor’s degree in
Jazz Studies from the University
of Southern California Thornton
School of Music, Dateh strives to
write music that is rich with soul
and thriving with energy and incorporates
many different musical influences.
Now, Dateh is ready to branch out
on his own as a solo artist in the
music industry. |

Scott Routenberg
Song Title: "Through Your Eyes"
Scott
Routenberg is a 26-year old composer,
jazz pianist, and programmer who is currently producing a new CD combining jazz and electronic music. He earned a B.A. in Music and Communication (2001) from the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
and a MM in Jazz Piano Performance (2003) from the University of
Miami where he is currently
studying Media Writing and Production.
Scott has received such honors as The ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Award
(2003-2004), the Hilton Head Jazz
Society Performance Scholarship
(2003), runner-up in the John Lennon
Songwriting Contest (2003, Electronic
Music Category) and composer participant
in the 2004 Henry Mancini Institute
in Los Angeles.

Barry Pringle
Song Title: "Mistakes"
At age 22, Barry Pringle is a grateful
young singer. "Growing up in
these New York streets wasn't easy
for me. I grew up in a single parent
home with my mother and younger
brother, and we moved around a lot,"
says Barry. He always wanted to
sing and he learned early on that
he would have to work hard to be
a success. Barry’s group,
Deuce, is a duo with Courtney Buckley,
a friend from high school. Barry
wrote "Mistakes" because
it shows the maturity in their voices
and their range.

Chico and 2nd Child
Song Title: "All About You"
David "Chico" Bass and
Tyra "2nd Child" McKinzie
have been writing songs together
for about two years. Chico is an
aspiring R&B recording artist/songwriter
and 2nd Child is a gifted producer/songwriter.
In the studio, 2nd Child performs
chords that pierce the soul and
Chico has a voice that is both powerful
and smooth, with exceptionally wide
ranges. If you give these two incredible
talents a keyboard, mic, and a pen
and paper, the outcome is pure magic.
The two are currently working on
Chico's demo and plan to shop for
a recording agreement later in 2005. |

Abby Dobson and Mark & Nicole
Hamilton of
h2O Productions
Song Title: "For The Love"
Abby
Dobson has studied classical voice
since junior high school, but it
wasn't until she won the infamous
Amateur Night competition on Showtime at the Apollo in 1996 that her career
took off. After years of countless
appearances and awards, Abby currently
lends her vocals on Taleb Kweli’s
album, Quality.
Husband and wife production and songwriting team Mark and Nicole Hamilton transformed a work relationship into romance. Married in Philadelphia in 2000, they operate h20 Productions and have been busy putting together a compilation album featuring ten unsigned, independent artists, which will be self-released in Spring 2005. Mark, a skilled producer and drum programmer, and Nicole, an experienced lyricist, produced the song, "Beatiful Distraction," for another musical married couple -- Kenny Lattimore and Chante Moore -- which is scheduled to be released on their next album.

The Heineken Music Initiative was founded as
a non-profit organization by Heineken USA Inc.
Its board includes representatives from Heineken
USA and the music industry.
Since 1975 The ASCAP Foundation has been dedicated
to supporting American music creators and encouraging
the development of American music through educational
and talent development programs. Included in
these are songwriting workshops, grants, scholarships,
music education programs, and public service
projects for senior composers and lyricists.
The programs of The ASCAP Foundation are supported
by contributions from ASCAP members and from
music lovers throughout the United States. |
