ASCAP "I Create Music" EXPO
The Premier Conference for Songwriters, Composers and Producers - Open to All

If you couldn't be in LA with us, we are again offering you the ability to watch the EXPO! Over 40 panels, which is nearly 60 hours of content, are available to stream online. By purchasing EXPO Video Access, you will get to view the panels at your leisure.

During The Writers Jam, the final event of the 2013 EXPO, these songwriters shared the fascinating stories behind the creation of their best-loved songs, and performed them live in a low-key, in-the-round setting.

The pleasure of attending A Good Understanding: Master Session with Nico Muhly was bearing witness to an elite level of passion, held by those who are the best at what they do. Moderated by Jon Burlingame and also featuring Kill Your Darlings writer-director John Krokidas, the panel was an inspiring, often humorous look into Muhly's experiences of creating music.

Hit-making producer No I.D. took a break from his production schedule with hip-hop greats like Kanye West and Jay-Z to share some wisdom with EXPO-goers. "It doesn't have to be formal school," he offered, "but if you don't educate yourself seriously...and take advantage of the information available to us online...then you're cheating yourself."

Be passionate, stay focused and stay driven! An agent, an attorney and a publicist discuss what an artist’s team does, some of the common pitfalls they have seen from their clients and the transition from songwriter to artist.

In the panel Musical Conquests of Don Jon, moderated by Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican, attendees saw Johnson and Gordon-Levitt detail their collaboration on the upcoming film, and discuss the rewards and pitfalls of following your own path to creative fulfillment.

Paul Williams led a panel discussion on the importance of coming together to fight for our rights as songwriters. Joining him on the panel were US Representatives Marsha Blackburn and Judy Chu as well as singer/songwriter Brett James and ASCAP CEO John LoFrumento. As we all know, the way people obtain music has changed drastically over the years. Online streaming is increasing and songwriters should be getting their fair pay.

The master session with Priscilla Renea was a different experience than any panel I had seen at the EXPO. During an interactive master session, the hit songwriter gave feedback to attendees as they wrote songs together.

As a five-time Grammy Award-winning record producer, Steve Lillywhite has worked on over 500 albums, including renowned artists U2, The Rolling Stones, The Killers, 30 Seconds to Mars and many more. His master session at the ASCAP EXPO, Producing Magic, was aptly titled as he took a packed audience through some of his most incredible experiences working with artists over the years.

There's no question about the necessity of having your brand online. How to do it simply and cost effectively? That's still an open question. Liz Leahy, CEO of Section 101, presented a seminar on honing your online presence - and how her company can help you do it.

These days, boutique music publishers have more latitude to experiment with their signings and business models, and they’re reaching a wider audience than ever before. The panelists on our New Horizons for Indie Publishers panel revealed what they look for in a new signing, what sort of deals they make and how to choose the right publisher for you.

At the final EXPO panel on Friday, ASCAP members from across the genre spectrum shared insights into their success. Songwriter-producer Antonina Armato, composer Michael Brook and singer-songwriter Mike Posner dispensed pearls of wisdom to the rapt audience.

Friday's panel Women in Music: Playing for Keeps featured some of the industry's most influential and successful women. Moderated by ASCAP's Nicole George-Middleton, the panel offered insight on how to make it in a male-dominated industry and featured personal stories from the female panelists.

As music creators, we generally prefer to focus on the process of making music rather than pitching ourselves. For this reason, the Music Supervision in the Digital Age panel at the EXPO proved to be vital for all attendees. The panel introduced a new facet of the entertainment business unbeknownst to most songwriters: the MCN, or Multi-Channel Network.

At this revealing EXPO keynote, Ken Jordan from electronic music duo The Crystal Method and DJ-producer RJD2 discussed how they've had successful and sustainable careers beyond the dance floor.
