ASCAP is the pioneer in college radio among U.S. performing rights societies. Beginning in 1979, we were the first society to license, survey and make payments on college radio performances.
In recognition of the impact of new and developing
musical genres which help shape the future
of American music and which gain early popularity
on college radio, ASCAP is proud to present
the 2005 ASCAP College Vanguard Award to Merge
recording artists The Arcade Fire. The band’s
mix of uplifting garage rock with theatrical,
avant-garde choruses on their Merge Records
debut album, Funeral, has achieved substantial
commercial and critical acclaim in the U.S.
and abroad. ASCAP is proud to honor these young
pioneers and their songwriting achievements.
Past ASCAP College Vanguard honorees have included
Beck, Modest Mouse, The Strokes, Built to Spill,
The Mars Volta and Jack Johnson.
