The
ASCAP Founders Award: Jackson Browne
Jackson
Browne has been writing, recording
and performing songs for more than
30 years. With 13 albums to his
credit, he is one of the most successful
singer songwriters of our time.
Jackson Browne's most significant
achievements have less to do with
the surface of things and more to
do with depth. From exploring the
deeply personal to the overtly political,
he has never been afraid to meld
serious thought with beautiful music.
With an unwavering artistic vision
and a strong commitment to his beliefs,
he has written some of the most
literate, introspective and profound
songs in popular music. Read

The ASCAP Creative Voice Award:
Metallica
Over
the last 23 years, Metallica has
steadily molded and shaped the rock
and metal genres, bending and pushing
the boundaries with rebellion and
bravery. Through it all, one thing
has always remained the same: the
defiant integrity of their music.
In doing so, they have become musical
icons, redefining the heavy metal
genre and standing up for the rights
of songwriters in an advanced technological
age where piracy runs rampant. Read

College Vanguard Award: The Mars
Volta
ASCAP
is the pioneer in college radio
among U.S. performing rights societies.
Beginning in 1979, we were the first
society to license, survey and make
payments on college radio performances.
In recognition of the impact of
new and developing musical genres
which help shape the future of American
music and which gain early popularity
on college radio, ASCAP is proud
to present the 2004 ASCAP College
Vanguard Award to Gold Standard
Laboratories/Universal recording
artist The Mars Volta, whose thrumming,
experimental and destined-to-be
influential debut album, "De-Loused
In The Comatorium," has achieved
substantial commercial and critical
acclaim in the U.S. and abroad.
ASCAP is proud to honor these young
pioneers and their songwriting achievements.
Past honorees of the Vanguard Award
have included Beck, Modest
Mouse, The Strokes, Built to Spill
and Jack Johnson.
