In another year of great music in film, ASCAP congratulates our members James Newton Howard and Maya Arulpragasam, better known as M.I.A. (PRS), for their 2009 Academy Award nominations. Nominations for the 81st Academy Awards were announced on Thursday, January 22nd and included the nomination of James Newton Howard in the Best Score category for his music from Defiance and of Maya Arulpragasam in the Best Song category for her contributions to the song "O Saya" from the film Slumdog Millionaire. Both films have already achieved critical acclaim and commercial box office success.

This is Howard's eighth Academy Award nomination, and a follow up to his nomination in 2007 for the score to Michael Clayton. Howard is also responsible for co-composing the score to 2008's top-grossing film, The Dark Knight with Hans Zimmer for which they have both been nominated for a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Award. This nomination is in addition to his 2009 Golden Globe Nomination for Defiance.

British songwriter and recording artist M.I.A. is a Grammy nominated songwriter for her 2008 single "Paper Planes." Her collaboration on "O Saya" earns M.I.A. her first Oscar nomination.

The 81st Academy Awards ceremony will air live on ABC on February 22, 2009 from the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. They will be hosted by actor Hugh Jackman.
