ASCAP offers a hearty congratulations to our members Melissa Etheridge, Forest Whitaker and Alan Arkin for their wins at the 79th Annual Academy Awards! In a ceremony held February 25th, 2007, at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, CA, Etheridge took home the award for Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song), for her song "I Need to Wake Up" from
An Inconvenient Truth. Whitaker won the Oscar for Best Performance by An Actor In a Leading Role for his portrayal of Idi Amin in
The Last King of Scotland, and Alan Arkin nabbed the Best Performance by An Actor In a Supporting Role award for his ribald grandfather from
Little Miss Sunshine.
The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also presented an honorary Oscar to legendary ASCAP composer Ennio Morricone, best known for his scores to Sergio Leone's "spaghetti western" films such as
The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and
Fistful of Dollars. According to Academy President Sid Ganis, "The Board was responding not just to the remarkable number of scores that Mr. Morricone has produced, but to the fact that so many of them are beloved and popular masterpieces." Morricone has earned five Academy Award nominations for original score — for
Days of Heaven (1978),
The Mission (1986),
The Untouchables (1987),
Bugsy (1991) and
Malèna (2000) — but had not previously received an Oscar.
We congratulate all of our Oscar-nominated ASCAP members,
