Whereas: New York City, which pulses with a vibrant medley of musical cultures, today devotes its ears to the infectious rhythms of Latin music. The American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers is proud to host the 13th Latin Music Awards, which recognize not only today’s hottest and most influential artists, but also the cultures and communities that nurtured them.

Whereas: In addition to honoring the Songwriter of the Year, Publisher of the Year, and Super Song of the Year in a number of musical categories, ASCAP will also present its most prestigious honor, the ASCAP Founders Award, to Ruben Blades. Few artists have played as large a role in the story of Latin music as Blades, who worked with a stunning array of influential artists, including Pete Rodriguez, Ray Barretto, and Willie Colón, with whom he enjoyed an especially long and fruitful collaboration. Today ASCAP recognizes not only an inspiring and influential musician, but also an eloquent and effective cultural spokesman.

Whereas: The vitality of the Latin Music Awards is testament to ASCAP’s fidelity to its founding principles. The organization was founded in New York City in 1914, with a mandate to ensure that music creators are fairly compensated for the public performance of their works, and that their rights are properly protected. Today, ASCAP represents more than 200,000 composers, lyricists, and music publishers, including not only established professionals, but also promising dreamers. ASCAP’s relevance was on display at yesterday’s General Annual Membership Meeting, which was well-attended and highly productive.

Whereas: The Latin Music Awards are an opportunity for the music community to honor past achievement and nurture unrealized potential. New York City, home to countless Latin music fans, thanks ASCAP for its continuing commitment to musical excellence, and congratulates Ruben Blades and the rest of tonight’s winners on their great success.

Now therefore I, Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, in recognition of this important event, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, April 5, 2005 in the City of New York as “ASCAP Latin Music Awards Day”.
