ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards 2004/2005

Joey Schneider
16, Novato, CA

Joey Schneider is a 16-year-old junior at the Marin School of the Arts. He began studying piano at 6, then took up and committed to the trumpet at 10, and has been composing since he was 12.

While in middle school he performed as trumpet soloist for both the symphonic and jazz bands. He won many awards at the junior high level, but his most prominent award came in 2001 when he won First Place, Jr. High School in Downbeat magazine's 24th annual Student Music Awards for original compositions. More regional awards included scholarships and special citations for performances at the 2001 UC Santa Cruz Music Festival, a medal for outstanding trumpet solo at the 2001 CMEA Jazz Festival, and a medal for outstanding trumpet solo at the 200 Folsom Jazz Festival.

Joey's early experience at performing in clubs began in 2000 where, at the age of 12, he joined local jazz groups for gigs throughout the Bay Area. Since beginning high school, he has been trumpet soloist for the school's symphonic and jazz bands. As a freshman he competed at the prestigious 2003 Reno Jazz Festival (University of Nevada-Reno) and won the Individual Award as Outstanding High School Performer/Trumpet. In 2004 his combo placed first in its division at Reno.

In addition to being a previous ASCAP Young Jazz Composer winner, Joey has been the recipient of scholarships for private study and for summer study at Berklee College of Music in Boston. In May 2004, Joey won Downbeat magazine's student music award for Outstanding Performance/Performing Arts High School Original Song.
Joey is trumpet soloist with the SF Jazz High School All-Stars and was selected for the elite group as a freshman. In May 2003, the ensemble performed as finalists in the Essentially Ellington competition at Lincoln Center and was awarded an honorable mention. Part of the SF Jazz Organization, the band performs regularly at a variety of Festival events and other special appearances throughout the SF Bay Area.
