ASCAP Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards 2004/2005

Chris Pattishall
18, Durham, NC

Chris Pattishall was born in Raleigh, NC on October 12, 1986. He began formal piano lessons at age 8. At 13 he entered Shepard Magnet Middle School in Durham, NC, where he performed in the school's acclaimed jazz band under the direction of Stanley Baird and Chip Crawford. He began taking intense private piano lessons with Crawford, which sparked Pattishall's love of jazz music and brought about his first encounters with the music of Thelonious Monk, a major influence on his development. Pattishall is currently finishing his senior year at C. E. Jordan High School in Durham, NC, where he was the first and only student ever admitted into the Jazz Combo (under the direction of David Robinson) as a freshman.

An accomplished performer, Pattishall has worked professionally in local venues for four years. He has performed in clinics and studied with Donald Byrd, Jimmy Heath, Barry Harris, Cyrus Chestnut, Walter Blanding Jr., Javon Jackson, Freddy Cole, Branford Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, David Berkman, Terri Lynne Carrington, Marcus Roberts, Ed Thigpen and Eddie Palmieri. Outside of jazz, Pattishall performed in Fly Agaric, a local jam/rock band, and in Junk in the Trunk, a 70's funk cover band that included Ivan Hampden (Luther Vandross, Chaka Kahn).
