Eric Hirsh grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina as a high school student in 2000. He is a 21-year-old junior at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, pursuing degrees in physics and music. Eric has been a pianist for 14 years, studying with renowned St. Louis jazz pianist Carolbeth True and with Tyson Rogers in Durham, NC. His teacher at UNC is Ed Paolontonio, a former student of Lennie Tristano. Eric also takes composition with Allen Anderson. Eric actively participates in the UNC jazz program, performing, writing, and arranging for the big band and jazz combos. His piece submitted for the Young Jazz Composers competition is featured on the UNC Jazz Band 2003 album From One To Another. Through the University's visiting artists program, Eric has worked closely with Marcus Roberts, David Berkman, Dick Oatts, and Slide Hampton. Eric is also a member of Charanga Carolina, a Cuban music ensemble that specializes in danzón music of the 1930s. Outside of school, Eric has recorded an EP with his funk/disco band "Bazungu," and is the producer for an electronic indie-rock duo, "Full of Stars." His previous awards include the Stacy Guess Outstanding Musician Scholarship at Chapel Hill High School and the Fred and Gail Fearing Jazz Award at UNC. Eric plans to pursue a Masters in Music Technology upon completion of his undergraduate degrees.
